Cancer Rehab Methods

1 Herbal Medicine: Cancer Rehab I

Can cancer be controlled?

In the West, many specialists believe that chemotherapy and radiology are the main treatment methods for cancer. However, these methods do not kill all cancer cells, and also causes significant damage to organs, immunity and healthy tissue. These methods are effective against cancer cells, but once the treatment stops, the damaged immune system is unable to fight against the continued spread of the cancer cells. This is why these treatments often fail to control cancer.

In these situations, our Centre recommends combining Western medicine with Chinese medicine treatment methods, and found that this combination is much more effective and beneficial against cancer than any one treatment method individually. We use the latest cancer rehabilitation methods from Beijing, as well as incorporating the 40 years of treatment experience of Beijing Bai Cao Cancer Rehabilitation Hospital. In Beijing, many cancer patients utilising this combination method will survive up to 10-20 years further.

Introduction

The Melbourne Cancer Rehabilitation Centre is part of an international collaborative venture with the Beijing Bai Cao Medical Tumour Institute and the Beijing Bai Cao Cancer Rehabilitation Hospital. These bodies were founded by the late renowned Chinese medical cancer specialist Professor Zhang Ren Ji, and specialise in the research and treatment of cancer and tumours. They utilise ten types of herbal formulae discovered by Prof Zhang, which can be widely used for cancers of the liver, brain, lung, stomach, intestines, breast, ovaries, bladder, blood, oesophagus, larynx, skin, lymph, prostate, etc. These formulae also function to relieve pain, regulate temperatures, increase blood cell concentration and immune system function, relieve swelling, and increase overall quality of life.

The purpose of the collaboration is to introduce the benefit of the skill and experience of the Beijing clinics to the Australian public. These, combined with a new exercise method ‘423 meridian qi gong’ (founded by Victorian registered Chinese medicine practitioner Dr Martin Liu), provide a solid base for cancer rehabilitation.

What is cancer?

Cancer is the result of abnormalities in normal cells in the body and organs. These cells regenerate regularly – at each stage there is the potential for the cell to undergo changes, for example under the influence of toxins. The cells become cancerous when they are no longer able to be regulated properly by the body, and spread uncontrollably. Tumours are a precursor to cancer – not all tumours become cancerous, some may remain benign.

Beijing Bai Cao Cancer Rehabilitation Hospital president Prof Zhang Da Ning

Prof Zhang Da Ning has been following his father Prof Zhang Ren Ji in cancer research for forty years. He uses Chinese medicine and qi gong with good results for cancer rehabilitation in China. He has received approbation from Chinese national and Beijing Central Television stations, as well as Chinese patients in general. It is simple and efficient with minimum side effects. This year Prof Zhang Da Ning will work together with Dr Liu to open the Melbourne Cancer Rehabilitation Centre, providing his research and clinical experience, as well as his cancer rehabilitation formulae. He also plans to visit Melbourne every year in a consulting capacity. His next visit will be in March 2009.

Why is cancer difficult to treat?

If cancer is diagnosed early, it is possible to remove all the cancerous tissue before it spreads to other parts of the body. However, in many cases, early diagnosis is difficult as early stages of the cancer are asymptomatic, or only mildly symptomatic. By the time such cancers are diagnosed, it will usually be during the mid to late stages, whereby the cancer has already spread to the blood and lymphatic nodes, which then circulate the cancer throughout the body. Thus, when the site of the original cancer is operated upon, there will still remain cancerous cells within the body.

The disadvantage of chemotherapy and radiology as treatment methods is their high toxicity – this weakens the immune system at a time when the body needs it to be strong. It has been found that a combination of Chinese medicine and Western cancer treatment is highly beneficial, because the Chinese medicine assists further to restrain the cancer cells, and also focuses on increasing the body’s health in general, and most notably strengthening the immune system.

Specialising in Cancer Rehabilitation:

In 1989 Dr Liu began researching cancer after his mother was diagnosed with cancer of the large intestines. The cancer was widespread, and she was told by doctors that she had only six months to one year remaining. Dr Liu recommended that she see a Chinese medicine specialist, who prescribed a traditional Chinese medicine herbal formula that restrains cancer cells. Used in combination with medical qi gong, which Dr Liu taught her, her quality of life improved markedly after six months. His mother lived a further 20 years in Beijing, and can look after herself.

In 1986, in order to expose this new method of treatment to more people, Dr Liu collaborated with renowned cancer treatment specialist Zhang Da Ning to publish ‘practical guidance for cancer treatment’, which became a widely selling book in Beijing.

In 2006, Dr Liu released his ‘423 Meridian qi gong’ DVD, for which he has obtained the copyright and patent. This year, he published his book ‘The Meridian Health Secret’ in English, which has great benefits for cancer rehabilitation.

If cancer patients find the treatment by Western practitioners inadequate, Dr Liu believes that a combination of Chinese herbal formulae and medical qi gong can help to reduce symptoms, boost the immune system, and increase overall quality of life.

Herbal Medicine

Dr Liu has utilised a combination of herbal medicine and qi gong in his medical practice for more than ten years, and found it beneficial for increasing immunity and decreasing symptoms in cancer patients, which results in an overall increase in quality of life. The combination of herbal medicine and qi gong produces better results than these methods used in isolation.

The greatest advantage of herbal medicine is that it is plant-derived, and has minimal adverse affects – only certified low-toxicity herbal medicines are used. This makes it excellent as a means to supplement chemotherapy and radiology, as it strengthens the immune system, allowing it to better tolerate the often severe side effects of such treatment methods.

Medical Qi Gong

Qi gong has over two thousand years of history in China. There are many types (Buddist, medical, etc), but they have the same fundamental functions: to regulate respiration via deep breathing, concentration on an area of the abdomen to project the oxygen to the meridian lines, and to improve blood circulation via a series of specialised exercises. All of these functions help to boost immunity naturally.

Moreover, the concentration required for these exercises helps to ease anxiety and tension, which is also good for immune function. Thus qi gong strengthens the immune system in two ways – physically and mentally.

In conclusion, a combination of Western and Traditional Chinese Medicine methods is optimal as a means of cancer rehabilitation – the Chinese medicine supplements the Western treatment methods in targeting both the symptoms and the cause of the cancer, and also takes a holistic approach in strengthening the body’s immune system in general.

Dr Liu has found that this combination allows patients to feel better, and enjoy an improved quality of life – in some cases it can control the spread of the cancer.

Chinese Medicine Attains Good Results for Cancer Rehabilitation

Chinese Medicine has achieved good results in cancer rehabilitation all over the world. According to the WHO’s survey, every year around 9 million people develop cancer, and 7 million die from cancer. In China, 1.6 million people develop cancer every year, and 1 million die. This gives society and families much trouble and pain. So many countries research cancer, with little results. Operations, and chemotherapy and radiology do help, but cannot solve the origin of the problem.

In China, apart from using Western medicine, Chinese medicine and acupuncture are also used. Many patients achieve very good results when consistently treated in this manner. According to the Chinese Health Department, every year in China more than 1,000 late-stage cancer patients relying on will power, medical qi gong and herbal medicines are able to prolong their lives. Thus these people become renowned for their struggles. Though these people are few, it indicates that cancers can be contained, and quality of life maintained.

Now introduce two people who have struggled against late-case cancer and achieved good results.

Zhang Yu Min

1958 May, he was diagnosed with late-stage lung cancer. Because his cancer cells had already spread, he was operated on three times. He also took Chinese medicine. In 1977, he was diagnosed with rectum cancer, and was transplanted with an artificial rectum and had his gallbladder removed. In fact, his cancer had not been fully removed. Doctors gave him 2 years maximum. He did not believe he would die, because he would struggle against the cancer. He learnt and practised qi gong and tai chi, as well as taking Chinese medicine. He used this method to self treat. To 1994, he had already lived another 36 years, during which he could work full-time. In 1992 and 1996, he was recognised by the Shanghai Government for his efforts against the cancer. In July 1996 at the sixth World Lung Cancer Conference he was recognised as the longest surviving lung cancer patient. In 1996 he had lived a further 38 years.

Gao Wen Bin

He was a general in the Chinese navy. In 1976 October he was diagnosed with lung cancer. He went to Beijing 301 Hospital, and was going to be operated on. On opening his chest, it was found that cancer cells had spread all throughout his lungs – it was very late-stage lung cancer, which could not be operated on. Doctors gave him 3-6 months maximum. They put him on chemotherapy and radiology, but he could not withstand the side affects – pain and nausea. He ceased the chemotherapy and radiology, but a specialist of qi gong Prof Feng Li Da taught him qi gong and suggested Chinese medicine. He decided to struggle for life, and thus took a combination of Western medicine and Chinese medicine, as well as qi gong. After 6 months, he put on weight and was physically better. Later he would constantly go to the park to exercise qi gong. In 1996, he was self-sufficient and physically competent at age 70. Beijing television held a contest for cancer survivors, where he was in the top 10 cancer survivors in Beijing. In 1997, he became Chinese Cancer Rehabilitation Association president. Many hospitals worldwide sought him to talk about his struggle.

Thus many cancers can be contained with confidence, consistent treatment, and good mentality. The above are only two examples of successful struggles against cancer. Many other examples can be found in China. Of these examples, a large proportion of the success can be attributed to themselves, via their willpower, optimism and effort.

Dr Liu started researching cancer rehabilitation methods 20 years ago, such as herbal medicine, acupuncture and medical qi gong. In 1996 he collaborated with Prof Zhang Da Ning to publish ‘Practical Guidance for Cancer Treatment’. Dr Liu believes that Chinese medicine, combined with medical qi gong is very beneficial for cancer patients. He has achieved good results for numerous patients in Melbourne, with control of symptoms and increase of energy.

Dr Liu also runs medical qi gong classes.
